It was a very successful Summer Slam tournament for SD Venom this past weekend. Venom had 6 teams playing during the 5 day tourney.
12u Red boys completed an undefeated Championship run going 4-0 in the Blue division to claim the title including impressive wins over Showtime Hoopers 44-22 the Mitchel Kernels 39-31 and Team Brandon 44-28 in the opener. The boys dominated and played extremely well all weekend en route to their title.
12u Grey played extremely well in the Orange division going 1-3, but had a chance to easily be 3-1 as they were in every game playing against some very competitive teams. Their win came in over the Barn Burner Academy 37-30. They had a heart breaking 28-31 loss to Next Level Academy, a game where they had a shot at the end to tie that just didn’t fall. This group has made some huge strides during the tourney!
13u finished 2-2 in the Blue division. They started 2-0 and made it to the Final 4. This group of boys had wins over Showtime Hoopers Black 53-50 and ND Tropics 49-45 to get to the final 4. They lost a tough one to Pentagon Walker 46-60 in the semis and then came out on the short end of a 27-49 loss to Next Level Academy. It was a great showing for the guys playing in the top division of the 13u’s.
14u Regional went 3-1 on the tourney. Dominating win over Team Brandon in the opening round 43-17 and a 50-46 win over JCC Lions propelled the boys into the Final 4 of the Orange division. The 14’s took care of business in the semis posting a 46-31 win over Barn Burner Academy to advance to the Championship game. In the title game they faced a very good MN Select team, but came up just a little short losing 49-53 in a very entertaining game.
Friday afternoon the 15u-17u took to the courts for their summer slam and the 15u’s playing in the top Blue division came out with a impressive win over a huge MN Knights team 58-50 in opening round play. A 12-2 run to start the second half propelled them to the victory. the 15s would finish the tourney 2-3 and a runner finish in the Silver bracket. They beat Sarpy Shock in the semis of the Silver bracket 73-70 making it to the Championship game. They run up against a very good SW Minnesota Stars, losing 36-62. It was a great weekend for these guys playing against some of the best competition in the region.
The 17u boys had a great run at Summer Slam. Playing in the Top 17u division and against some of the top ranked teams in South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. the boys finished 3-2 and in 3rd place of the Gold Bracket. An opening round win over Sacred Hoops 94-85 was the game of the tourney. Then a win over WI Academy 74-70 put the boys at 2-0 in their pool. Next was a 66-61 loss to UVA Stan that put 3 teams at 2-1. Venom missed making the Platinum division final 4 on point differential (-8). This setup a game against the Pentagon Schoolers in the semis of the Gold bracket. The boys were flat, got behind early and eventually lost 72-52. the boys bounced back with an impressive win over a top 10 Minnesota Fury Kaupa team in the 3rd place game 68-62. It was a great recruiting weekend for the 17s as well. Playing in front of many College recruiters; 6’7 F Solomon Bach (Watertown) pick up an offer from Mount Marty following the Sacred Hoops win.
Great showing by all of our teams! Venom finished the weekend 15-11 and claimed 1 Championship; 2 Runner up finishes and a 3rd place finish.
SD Venom 17u competed in the Mr Basketball Dakota Showcase this past week at Augie. It was great weekend for the boys going 4-1 and making it to the finals before losing to BBA Shane in the Championship. Venom defeated BBA in pool play to go 3-0 and get the number 1 seed in the bracket, Venom finished the last 3:30 of the game with 4 players due to foul trouble. Venom beat the Tropix in the semifinals to set up the rematch with BBA. We knew they were going to come gunning for us and knew we needed to match their intensity. BBA came out on fire shooting the ball at a very high percentage. Untimely turnovers, fouls and missed shots attributed to the 60-79 loss. The score was closer than the outcome would show. Venom as down 6 with about 2:30 left, but just coudn’t get it closer and BBA ran away with the the win. Venom was playing with a mix matched line up all weekend. Garret Kolbeck from our (15u) and Tanner Te Slaa (14u National) both played significant minutes and Venom was down key pieces in each of the 5 games played due to team camps, work and family commitments. Venom played multiple games without PF Solomon Bach (Watertown) PF Jackson Miller (West Central) C Kaleb Joffer (Tea Area) also they played entire tourney without PG/SG Kade Stearns (Tea Area) due to sprained ankle and broken finger. Mason Ritter (Tea Area) had solid tourney garnering much of the point guard duties while Stearns is out. Dawson Paulsen (RC Stevens) had a excellent shooting weekend. Ritter and Paulsen led the team in scoring for the tourney. Jack Unruh (Tea Area) continues to impress and improve with his hard work inside. Spencer Te Slaa (Boyden Hull, IA) had huge games Thursday and Friday and playing with much more confidence. Patrick Niyonshuti (SF Roosevelt) had his best showing of the summer getting to the rim and hitting some outside shots. It was a great showing for our guys in a high exposure tourney. Great job boys! Can’t wait to see this group with full squad in the next 2 events.

SD Venom had a very successful weekend at the Harrisburg / MAYB tourney. Venom brought home Championship hardware in the 6th Grade boys and 8th Grade boys divisions and a runner up finish in the 7th Grade boys, (on a mere technicality of point differential -1 point in margin; no championship game and top two teams didn’t play each other in pool play). Overall Venom went 17-12 with the 2 Championships and 1 Runner up finish. All of our teams played and represented themselves extremely well for this being only the 2nd tourney of the spring/summer season. All teams showed a lot of improvement throughout and have a lot to be proud of. Now it’s time to get back to the gym and continue working on getting better! GO VENOM!
